Little garden porn for Diane.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Finally figured out how to minimize and took several pics of the garden today, but only minimized the one to see if this works. The key seems to be to click on "for the web" or something like that when saving pics from Easyshare. IIRC, this photo shows some beans and moving right toward the bush that separates the NW from the NE garden, there's a watermelon plant surrounded by turnips. My favorite in this particular garden is the chard plant. It would be the one that looks all shiny and proud. I'm gonna keep it goin' as long as I can; it's my understanding that if I pick off the leaves on the outside, I could keep it going all summer. Nice alternative to plucking up the whole plant, IMO. This NW garden was planted several weeks after the NE garden, which (one would think) would be more firmly established by now. That's not necessarily true, but the plants Diane sent were planted there, so I need to get a pic of that area, as well. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Well, it's SMALLER, but at least I figured out how to get it both smaller and HERE. LOL. Mints are doing FINE; I didn't look...can you see the tomato planted in the middle of the mints?

LOL. I went from too big to too little. Ya can't see the tomatoes that are growing in those mint patches.

We've got thunder and stuff, and it actually looks like we might get some rain tonight. :woot:!

Left to right is the same as I mentioned somewhere else: Walking Onions is #1 (see how there's some room on the left to walk but not on the right?)..then spearmint with whatever tomato I planted in with the spearmint this past week, then the yellow squash & catalogna and then the elephant garlic and then the empty square that should've held the lemon balm and then the peppermint and then the...

Woo hoo! I looooove garden porn! Makes me want to go fondle my seeds.

Looking good! So neat and tidy! Have you been snacking on anything yet? This week, we harvested a bunch of the elephant garlic scapes. Should have done it last week, probably. They're super yummy! Nellie loves chomping on them. She loves chomping on ANY of the garlic and onions greens. Baby breath ain't so sweet anymore.

Oh, the lemon balm is finally looking more alive. I must have cut it back way too far because it has been slow-growing this spring. Anyhoo, send me your mailing addy again in the next couple of weeks and I'll mail ya some bigger, stronger starts. Need anything else while I'm at it? I might even be able to figure out a way to mail some eggplants. If the garden companies can do it, I might. It'll probably be a week or two before I get around to it, though.

Just got back from the plant swap and I'm exhausted. BUT I just had to tell you it was incredible! I came home with a buttload of really cool plants. :-D

We've had radishes and a HUGE salad from chard, lettuces, spinach, catalogna, arugula and something else I can't remember. Outside of using the radishes in salads, I've used them to spice up some gravies in combination with onions. The weather's been so hot that they're already quite "hot".

The elephant garlic plants haven't scaped. I think it's because they've been newly separated. I read Alan talking about eating those, too.

Let's wait until next year for another care package...if I'm still even into this next year. I'm gonna be running out of space for these things soon. You've also done quite ENOUGH, thank you, very much! We've lived all these years without lemonbalm or eggplant and we can live another year without them if the one seed I started indoors drops dead. I think I already told you that we just started eating that fruit this past year.

It's neat and tidy because I took the pictures after it had been weeded. We had a good rain the day after I took the pics, and I haven't really spent much time seeing if weeds grew more than things I WANTED to grow because the fireants get so active after a rain that I already got a bite on the one peek I did take. That blue hubbard squash is really looking proud and pretty. The fireants are monitoring her, as well.

BUT I just had to tell you it was incredible! I came home with a buttload of really cool plants.

I knew it would be. Spill it! You know you want to! EVERY detail! I looked on your blog for the skinny, but ... NOTHING.

Ooh, fresh salad fixin's!! I'd kill for that right now. Stupid dentist completely screwed up my teeth last year so I can't eat crunchy stuff anymore (until I pay a different dentist yet more $$ to fix what was messed up). /whine

See, now, I tend to forget that not everyone is a complete gardening maniac like me. I need a good smack upside the head once in a while. If ya ever decide you do want some lemon balm or whatever floats your boat, don't hesitate to ask.

Ants. Kill 'em all. Don't care what it takes. Just kill 'em all. Yeah, I'm dreaming. There's no way to kill them. Maybe slow them down for an hour or two but then all of their relatives just move right in. I get bitten most every day working outside. Stupid ants.

Swap details? Um... Four hour trip up plus another four back, not including pit stops. Took maybe 75-ish plants plus seeds. Came home with just about the same amount of plants (had only planned on bringing home maybe 1/2 dozen). Gobs of cannas, calladia (think that's the name?), devil's backbone, orange mint, catnip, cherokee red tomato, hubbard squash, aloe something (not vera), purple passion something-or-other, naked ladies (yeah, the kids all had some fun with that one), 2 colors of creeping phlox, tall phlox, garlic, forsythia, mulberry tree, redbud tree, various succulents (forgot all of the names), etc, etc, etc. Oh!! And 5 handmade foo-foo smelly soaps! I absolutely love handmade soaps! All kinds of different "flavors" and they all smell heavenly. Ahhh.... I also won a door prize--a HUGE pot of shade plants.

You must know, of course, how you "meet" people on the internet and get to "know" them, knowing full well that they're probably not like their internet personalities. These folks were all wonderful--kind, generous, funny, down-to-earth, REAL people. I'm sold. I'll be going back to every get-together they have (that we happen to have both time and money to blow on). Steve had fun, the kids had a blast, and I actually enjoyed them. I'm not a people person and detest groups of people so I wasn't expecting to really enjoy it. But I did enjoy both the swap and the people. Very cool.

I got about half of the swap plants planted out today. Gonna try to finsh the rest up in the next couple of days. I'll take some pics when I do so you can see the loot.

Just wanted to share that Michael's mom took one of those mint leaves and threw it into her water glass.

Michael told me that they'd be bringing their own drinks. Yeah...they didn't know anything about that, either. You are SO in trouble, Michael over that faux pax...however you spell that.

Everyone seemed able to work around the missing ingredients, though, so it was a great weekend, IMO.
