Here is the cake I made for everyone at work. This is my favorite holiday!!! Just because it's one day you can tell everyone you care about that you love them and there's no obligation to do anything. That's why I chose this day to do something for everyone I care about. LOVE YOU!!!
And hope you have a sweet, sweet Valentine's day!!!

That's one BEAUTIFUL cake, No. 2...enough to make a mother proud!

AND, you figured out how to post photos to the blog!
[insert another dancing banana]
WOO-HOO! (hold on while I finish dancing around the room)
I like Valentine's Day, too, for much the same reasons. Em's birthday was the 13th. He was spared by only ONE day being named Valentino <-- Oh, the horror! For his birthday we went to Louisiana to gamble and we had a REALLY fun time. I think we enjoy it so much because it's like playing interactive video games with a financial reward on occasion.
Next month's gambling experience (just because we seem to enjoy gambling once/month for a day or two) will be combined with his annual Tunica golfing event. I've spent a fair amount of time this morning online reviewing swim caps thinking that while he golfs with his friends I'll work out at the hotel gym, swim at the hotel pool, play some slots, and maybe even hitch a ride to downtown Tunica on the south or Memphis on the north. Swim caps are a necessity for people with hair as long as mine with intentions of actually swimming on a fairly regular basis. It's even looking like I might need TWO caps...one to just hold my hair and the other to provide protection from the elements and look cute. I won't be having a spring garden this year because Em wants to replace the backyard grass, so my outdoor activity will be swimming at our local pool.
Love you, Sweetie!
Yesterday (keeping with the heart theme of this thread), we attended the Women's Heart Fair in Dallas. We've tried to attend this every year for several years now, but this was the first year that Em got the same testing that I did (despite his lack of vagina). It's too late for anyone reading this to attend a Women's Heart Fair in cities near you, but put Sister to Sister in your favorites and check February of next year. We've attended for several years now if we're in a position on the date it's held.
My blood pressure was outstanding (as it always is) and if high numbers were GOOD when it comes to blood pressure, I'd win an award or two, but high numbers AREN'T good when it comes to blood pressure. My LDL cholesterol number was high, too, but it's GOOD to have an outstanding number when it comes to LDL cholesterol. I even read that my highness in LDL cholesterol will cancel out another number that puts me at high risk of a heart attack, so I choose to select my high blood pressure number for that cancellation effect. So, anyway, we have these numbers and what *I*'ve chosen to do to create BETTER numbers is concentrate on more aerobic exercise in our lives. I'm not gonna ask Em to give up smoking and I'm not gonna ask myself to give up beer, even though both of us have triglyceride levels reflecting our indulgence in such things.
We eat a pretty heart-healthy diet and our cholesterol levels reflect that, but we could work on that recommendation of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise MOST days of the week thing, and took a brisk walk to Kroger and back today with that thought in mind. It was 34 minutes, not counting the time we spent inside the store. Em's not fond of aerobic exercise, but he did it and did it well. Brisk walks are invigorating, IMO, and lend themselves to extenuation of aerobic activities. Em might think of it in the same way SOMEDAY.
He's off to watch his grandson play football right now, and we'll be attending a play at our local community college tonight entitled, "The Balcony Scene" by Will Calhoun.
Alvin has had it. He sees civilization crumbling around him and wants no part of it. The only place he feels safe is inside his Chicago high rise apartment, so that’s where he stays until Karen moves in next door. She is a die hard optimist with a high pressure job and a relentless ex-boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer. Alvin and Karen meet on their adjoining balconies and form a friendship that sets their two worlds on a collision course.
I'll let you know if we enjoy it.
Great cake!!
Happy belated Valentine's Day! I'm not into the holiday myself so didn't even realize when it passed. I did, however, take note of the millions of annoyingly pink ads exploding around my head for the past month or so. Sheesh.
Happy birthday, Em!
I need to make a big-time correction to my above comment: It's my HDL cholesterol that's high, not my LDL. It's not a good thing to have a high LDL.
We enjoyed the play.
Regarding your photos, Diane, I think the picture you took of Nellie with the stern face really captured the mood of the moment, and that's what the photographers were charged with capturing for the pieces on the depression era.
I'm curious to know when gambling became such a past time for you two. I hope it doesn't in any way have something to do with my temporary relocation to Las Vegas because that's where it all seems to start to me.
Valentine's day went pretty good. I tried offering cake to most of my regular customers, but the general concensus seemed to be that cake and beer don't seem to appealing. Ah well. It was the thought.
My two Valentines this year were my friends Monica and Jenny. The funny part was in the gifts that they got me, they both seemed to get me purple monkeys and stuffed roses. It was an odd enough choice for both that doesn't really reflect anything about me, but it was strange that they both thought these would be great gifts for me. Jen's thought was that I just pick good friends who think alike. :)
Thanks also for my kudos on the cake and the posting momma! From playing around with MySpace, I've found this beautiful gadget called photobucket, which gives you the "computer" version of any picture. It's a wonderful thing.
Okay, gotta go do laundry!!
xoxo

Nothing to do with you, Grasshopper; we've been going to LV twice/year or so since before you ever moved there. Never considered myself much of a gambler, but Em enjoyed Atlantic City when he worked in DC, Indian Reservation gambling when he worked in Albuquerque. When we've driven to Atlanta, he's stopped to gamble in both Louisiana AND Mississippi. The first time, I just watched him (too cheap to play), but there's a lot of entertainment to be had for just a few dollars playing penny slots. The entertainment isn't limited to gaming, of course. Watching people gamble is fascinating, IMO. As far as people watching goes, it beats an airport in its diversity of types. My favorites are the farmers, with the superstitious (people who wave their hand over the monitor to bump the juju) coming in second. The gaming is ALSO fun when we're winning on occasion, because we play the machines that have bonuses and the bonus starts the interactive video game. If we're not winning, we've learned to take breaks. We people-watch, enjoy a meal somewhere, or go back to our room. We're now splitting meals, so we stop to eat twice as often for the same price. We don't play to win; we play to have fun, and we DO have fun.
This month's entertainment will be almost exclusively provided by the local junior college. We'll be seeing another exhibit this week (this one for Black History Month), with a dance exhibit early next week. We'd like to see John Edwards in Dallas on Wednesday, but I can't seem to find out where he'll be speaking. Gonna try my hand at making Em some Hot Cross Buns, as well this week. That man goes nuts over Hot Cross Buns.
ha ha ha. That reminds me of a song we used to have to play for piano lessons:
hot...cross...buns.
hot...cross...buns.
Mama's in the kitchen makin'
hot...cross...buns.
Now Mama's REALLY going to be in the kitchen making hot cross buns. I never knew what those were. Still don't, so maybe you should blog a recipe or picture, so I am better informed the next time I try playing that song. :)
We also have some upcoming productions at my Junior College that I have to attend for my Theater class. The first one is Mame. I'm trying to get a group of gals together to accompany me, so it will be more of a fun event than homework. I'll let you know my review. It runs the first week of March.
xoxo
I was gonna take a picture of my hot cross buns, No. 2, but it was my first time baking them and I didn't consider them picture perfect. I froze 3/4 of the dough, so I'll be making a batch of 6 buns every week for the next 3 and can incorporate several changes with aesthetics in mind. I need to carve the cross deeper and make the glaze thicker, but they're sure tasty, AND they're the best hot cross buns that money can buy around here. <-- We did the grocery shopping yesterday and NONE of the stores have any made. :-) They're supposed to be eaten hot (hot cross buns) which is why I'm baking them in small batches. I'll give you the legend behind them when I provide a photo.
